Question:
Do you find yourself reading the obituaries? I've picked up this odd habit of reading them once or twice a day online?

Guilty. I'm just nosy about what's become of the folks back home

I got into the habit of reading the obituaries when I was employed as a claims rep with social security for 32 years. You'd be surprised how many claimants died while I was processing their claims - especially people who had filed for disability benefits.

I no longer get the newspaper delivered to me but I read it online daily and never fail to read the obituaries because now people I know are just as likely to be featured in them.

No because I don't buy newspapers. The only paper I read, if I am fortunate enough to get one, is the Metro - a free paper we can pick up on one of our bus services. As I don't drive and use buses most days I manage to get one several days a week. No obituaries in there (as far as I know).

I cancelled my newspaper subscription several years ago, but yes, the obits were one of the first things I'd read. One time I saw a picture of a lady who eerily very much resembled me. She was my age too. Gave me the creeps, because I secretly would check to see if maybe I had died & as usual was the last to know.

I do read the obits online now & then when a family member or friend dies. And of course I start clicking on everybody else's obit too.

I have always read the obituaries everyday and have found out allot about people that I never knew about. That is an important part of the daily news.

I don't know that many people who die so not interested they are probably more common in small towns where you know everyone. My grandma always told me who was in the hospital and who died when I talked to her but it was people I didn't know. She lived in one town 98 years so knew lots of old people.

I look up people in the SS death index to see if they died, found my ex that way and a few other people I hadn't seen in years.

I read my name in the obituaries once. I was relieved to find he had a different address than mine.

i read the obits once a week if i catch the local newspaper but am not fussed about it. i expected to see a local connection near my age every week but instead there are more tragedies like father, child, wife - unexpected deaths like Tunisia and road accidents as well as fires.

I look to see if I am listed in the Obits,

if I do not see my name, I just carry on
