Two guys I ran with when I was a kid: TOOT and JUNE BUG. In the Navy one guy LOVED root beer. Since the soda dispenser machine was available 24/7 on the air craft carrier we were on (USS Nimitz CVN-68), we always had 3 pitchers of soda in our office (root beer, Coke and a 3rd). This guy's nick name was ROOT BEER (his real name was RUBIO). Our acting Leading Petty Officer for our division on the same ship was named ABELIDO, but his nick name was ABBA DOO DOO. On that ship my nick name (besides Andy) was Pappa Smurf (someone got my foul weather jacket and stenciled it on there). The repair person who worked on the pier forklifts only knew me as Pappa Smurf. She had to get in touch with me one day and I wasn't on the pier. She went to the mid-ship quartedeck and had them page "SK1 PAPPA SMURF, LAY TO THE PIER."
The military can give funny nick names at times. I was stationed with 5 different Mullins and each one was called MOON (after the character in the old funny papers). Then there was Stoney Burke (after the old time cowboy), Digger O'dell (after the undertaker in the Life of Riley), Hoot Gibson (after another old time cowboy). One of the female sailors I was stationed with was nick named Spike (never knew why). Then there was one of the Bos'n Mate senior petty officers, Momma Boats.
When I was in Antarctica, the guy that ran the main warehouse was called Big John (the phone would ring and he would answer, "Big John's Warehouse, Big John speaking.") One of the other store keepers answered one day, "GSK warehouse" and the caller said, "Oh, I got the wrong number," and hung up!
One of the young ladies who worked for me stood about 4'11"...her nick name? STRETCH!
