Roy Orbison..Because of the number of hits in early 60's. Beautiful voice
Billy Fury...By far the best singer this side of the Atlantic
Del shannon...Lots of his songs stir happy memories
Gene Vincent...A good old fashioned rocker

There were so many brilliant groups and singers about during the sixties - The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw to name just a few.
I couldn't possibly decide just one singer. I used to look forward to Top Of The Pops because every group/singer on it was somebody famous.

An excellent question with so many wonderful answers.
Let me throw three more into the mix.
Jackie Wilson:There was not one style of music this man could not perform.
Gene Pitney:Seems like every other top ten hit in the 60's had his stamp on it.
Jay Black of Jay & The Americans: The most powerful voice in the 60's.Remember "Cara Mia?"

Roy Orbison was one of my favourites. Such an unbelievable range to his voice, yet had a tragic life.
There were so many in the 60's that it's really hard to choose. Today's singers have all the trappings to keep their voice in tune, which wasn't available then. I also liked the Searchers, Everley Brothers, Elvis, Buddy Holly, and many more.

I was in grade school in the early to mid-sixties. This is why my choice is Julie Andrews. In !964, it was Mary Poppins songs. In 1965, it was the songs from The Sound of Music! Yep, she wins hands down with me.

Way back in the 50's and spilling over into the 60's one Brit songster always stood out, especially to the millions of workers who used to listen while they worked...Donald Peers - In a shady Nook, by a Babbling Brook - he was instantly recognizable...

Vikki Carr. Real talent, pitch perfect tone and a great entertainer unlike the puerile modern crap that hides behind electronic technology to sound acceptable.
There were so very many during the sixties. It was hard to choose.
Good question.

I'm assuming you mean a single person and not a group, therefore, I nominate the late, great Dusty Springfield.

A hard one there were so many good ones. I would have to say Bob Dylan as he epitomises the sixties ,festivals, protest, acoustic, electric ,his words were everywhere.

Johnny Cash. He'd been doing it his way for a decade and waited for the world to like it. He came into his own in the 60's.

Hi Gerry, well I was always and still am a big Elvis fan.
I would love to have seen him live but it was never meant to be.
Some great answers and memories evoked here.

Maybe Barbara Streisand. She had the personality, talent and took over the movies and radio with her one of a kind voice.

My choice would be Peter, Paul and Mary, because I loved their style and their lyrics. My father also enjoyed them.

to me it's between jim morrison or the electic horseman himself jimi hendrix.. when i moved to the midwest i found jimi lives! on in songs played everyday on the airwaves. bob lived so his reputation suffered. and his songs were so topical, they dated. not the new stuff, the greenwich village stuff, what he built his house upon.
