I think this question applies only to Australian pensioners.

This is because the Australian Federal government is so awash with money gained from the unpopular GST [ ADDED VALUE] tax that is such a burden on the polulation.

Pensioners with only the pension for income have been sucked into the system, where GST is paid on all their weekly bills.

According to wikipedia: Social Security, in the United States, currently refers to the Federal Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program.

The original Social Security Act and the current version of the Act, as amended encompass several social welfare or social insurance programs. The larger and better known initiatives of the program are listed in the article.

The disability program known as Supplimental Security Income (SSI) is not the same as Social Security, and can be paid along with it. The dollar amounts of both change every year.
