An Obituary printed in the London Times.....Absolutely Brilliant !!

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense,
who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he
was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red
tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable
lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend
more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not
children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old
boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens
suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher
fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his
condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing
the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their
unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but
could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to
have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became
businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their
victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed
to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a
little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust,
by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his
son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

When you see this in print, it's almost embarrassing that we allowed him to die, that we didn't see it coming a long time ago. Thanks for posting this.

Surely this was well written and witty, most of the time.

Sadly there is nothing superior about common sense, which has changed through the time of humans. In the olden, olden days it was common practice to torture and hurt people for imaginary crimes, created by people who adhere to the mighty imaginary friend. Common sense has usually, through out time been inferior to such concepts as logic and reason and thus for I have, personally, never had any high hopes regarding the concept. Common sense is by no means dead, it has just been lowered from an already low state to state which might be conclude as unacceptable.

Regarding the woman with the hot coffee, which was the only thing I had a problem with in the article since I've researched it personally. I was myself under the impression, to begin with, that it was just another moron who didn't comprehend that coffee was, in fact, hot. It was not as I expected. Apparently the coffee was so hot that when the woman dropped it into her lap she got severe burns on her thighs. Given that she was an elderly woman this could surely have killed her. She was mostly attempting to get Mc Donald's to reduce the heat of the coffee from an unnecessary 180–190 °F (82–88 °C) to a more reasonable 140 °F (60 °C). The outcome was, after having to give away a ****-load of money which seems to be the only way to get corporations to change their policies, that they reduce the warmth of the coffee, they serve, by some °s.

Read a book last decade about the loss of common sense in government and laws. One example was boarding room houses that were outlawed by city councilmen in large cities all over America, they were turned into expensive real estate condos....it was thought that the city council members were bribed to pass those laws. The new laws forbid building more boarding room houses and it created a lot of homelessness in working class people too. One enterprising businessman in San Diego decided to do something about the homeless problem, he built boarding room houses to rent out to those who were either working or looking for a job (many were sleeping on park benches because rents for apartments were unaffordable). The city put up a fuss but he told them he would screen each applicant and have strict rules (no violence, drugs etc.). His plan worked wonderfully and he turned a profit. That was just an example of how a city government tried to snuff out a little bit of common sense.

Common Sense's big sister is the Golden Rule, she isn't dead but struggling to survive in many institutions.

Thank you for reminding me of this. But we will never forget Common Sense. He allowed everyone who wished to, to keep a little piece of him in remembrance. If we continue to exercise that little piece, we will come to have our own common sense.

Just make sure to guard it wisely, or the politicians, overly liberally minded and PC brigade will insist on its removal.

yes, his passing is very sad but he has been ill for many, many years. perhaps if things go right he may be reborn when others can help him recover. but it will take a lot of time because things have been happening to cause the disease to keep spreading.
