It`s one of the perks of being over a certain age that allows one to be Intolerant and Grumpy without hiding it all behind a cheerful facade. I take great delight in annoying anyone who tailgate me in their cars, by driving really slow (but in most cases I pull over and let the idiot pass) and I have the confidence to complain in shops if the cashier has a bad cold and is coughing all over my goods.

I `m also very forthright and state my opinions in black and white. What you see is what you get.

I do think many folk complain more when as they age , but I think a lot of it comes from acquiring the confidence to do so, which they lacked when younger for fear of offending, and not always from intolerance or grumpiness. Most of us forget though that we were once the irritating teenagers that annoyed old folks and called them grumpy or "Daft old gits". It`s all very normal and I think it always will be.

I personally find it very satisfying to be Grump at times. Jmo.

No, age doesn't cause it, I think. I believe it's a lot to do with what type of personality a person has had all their lives. There are people out here from 16 to 99 who think the world owes them a favor for some reason, then there are the types who try to do all they can to make the world a happier place. Many seniors have had hard lives as children, worked till retirement years to manage to have what they need when they could no longer work. Sometimes, when an older person loses the love of their life, they get like your description, because they are lonely, depressed and miserable. All the more reason to be kind and friendly to these old grumps, men and women. Any of us could turn out intolerant and grumpy, but most of us don't.

It is the young who are the most intolerant i.m.o. They can see an old person walking slowly (something the old person cannot change - we don't have 5 gears like a car) and they push past because they have no patience to go at out pace for a few yards. They are the grumpy ones - again, because we are 'in their way'.

I don't find fault in all teenagers but I do know many who have much to learn and need such teachings urgently, particularly in the field of manners, tolerance, patience and curbing vile language and filth).

It is their lack of patience and their filthy mouths which make older people appear to be intolerant and grumpy but that does not make the elderly people the problem.

We, when young, were taught how to behave in public, what words were not acceptable, what good deeds would be expected of us to make life easier for people who were struggling etc. Virtually all that is now lost and today's young will not understand how we feel about this until they are elderly themselves - by which time there will probably be NO nice, helpful, caring people left to teach the next generation how young people should behave.

It is not ageing which causes the intolerance, it is the lack of understanding of the problems which come with ageing which bring about the intolerance.

True.

But why?

Impatient because after all the years every scrap of our patience as been used up by continually dealing with idiots.

Find fault with teenagers because they remind us of what we once were.

Complain about TV because the vast majority of it we have seen so many times we know the scripts backwards.

As for next doors garden... well, the Smiths never do a lick in theirs and the Jones, well you'd think they were entering the Chelsea Show.

Politics? Well WHO doesn't grump about those stone-hearted morons?

And annoying the driver behind... tell the cretin to stop tail-gating!

And that's from a grumpy old woman.

These problems are bound to crop up once in a while, after all we've been there, bought the T shirt and worn the damn thing out!

Yes I think those who suffer from aches and pains are grumpy and also there is a certain sense, for me at least, of freedom to speak your mind.

Getting older has to have some compensations!

And the other thing is , I listen to my staff complaining about their lives all the time and they range from 10 years to 40 years or more younger than me.No one notices it because perceptions are different.

Anyway what the heck. I am enjoying getting old disgracefully. The only way to go believe me!

Miserable young git begets miserable old git. It's not age, it's continuing to age with the same personality. The only changes I've ever noticed as people get older is they mellow a bit. I personally think that comes from having kids though. The first baby, you worry if he/she dinks a finger. By the third one, you might start to worry after the third time you drop the baby on his/her head.

Politically speaking, I tend to agree with something Churchill said, "Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.” Obviously everyone doesn't become a conservative as they get older, but most become more conservative. Likewise, if you're a miserable git as a young person, you'll probably remain a miserable git when you get older.

Me? I'm somewhere between the two--in age and disposition. lol

I know a lot of 30-somethings that gripe about the same things. Age has nothing to do with it; maybe old people look more awful doing it.

As far as wanting old people do drive faster ... are you kidding? You want an 80-something with a reaction time of 5 seconds to be driving 70 MPH next to you on the freeway? Are you nuts?

I recently read any article which states that grumpy old men were the outcome of your body not producing enough testosterone. This explains things well doesn't it? So get out there and get some treatment you grumpy old men.

Guess as we now live longer and longer, we could become grumpier and grumpier!!

No, I have always had a miserable face, even as a child,my mother used to pat my head and say,If your face wants to smile, let it. Even now I look sad but inside I am jovial,as for finding fault with the young, they are only doing what we wished we could have done but only dare think about.

People's basic attitude rarely changes as they age. What changes is our use of those social filters which tempered our responses.

As for the driving, I have gotten a wee bit more cautious, but I can still take it though a corner if I have to.

I don't know about miserable. I enjoy my status as a curmudgeon, a bitcher, and lacking patience with the incompetent. As a retired SOB, I've earned my right to complain about what I don't like. I also have the credentials to back up my complaints.

I claim MY right to do and say as I feel, by seniority alone.

Miserable old (man) git, grumpy old woman, we're entitled to be in response to the way we're treated.

My days of deliberately driving slow were in my middle years to annoy the whizz kid tailgaters who were annoying me.

You bet your sweet , miserable biffy. Not only that, but I have turned into a crazy cat lady too.

I blame my sour attitude of aches and pains. We lived on this earth awhile and earned the right to be mean, old crones. If I ever had a day of 'happy' my family would commit me!
