I loved Merle Haggard as much as I did Buck Owens.
It would be hard to pick a favorite. I did get a kick out of Okie from Muskogee because Merle was a native Californian that enjoyed poke'n fun.

I liked Merle Haggard very much and thought he was a great example of the kind of men who are the backbone of this country. Having two grandparents from Muskogee, "Okie from Muskogee" was at the top of my list of favorites.

I liked several of his oldies, like the "Okie from Muskogee" and a few
others. But I do really like the ballad, "If we make it through December". I like the clarity of his voice in this one. I also liked,
"Mama Tried" when he was singing about his bad boy days. Johnny
Cash appeared on stage in the penitentiary, and told Merle not to hide
his prison past from his fans. Or it would come back and hit him in
the face some day, with a sleazy tabloid article. Governor Ronald Regan pardened him from prison and after he got his release, he threw himself into writing and singing and picking and attracting audiences wherever he played. The recordings came steadily and so did the jobs. Abd he became an icon to the country music fans everywhere.

I doubt he would have made it without Bonnie Owens by his side. I liked Buck Owens more than Merle. He wrecked the natural beauty at the mouth of the Kern River Canyon with his mini-mansion back in the 70's. I used to live in that part of California. Merle wasn't exactly what you could call "well liked" by most locals in those days.
