Is handwriting becoming a lost art?

How much of what you do is actually hand written? I rarely even address an envelope nowadays because all of my banking is done online (no checks to write/send) I guess it is true that if you don't use it, you lose it...my handwriting doesn't even look like my own anymore...

Yes you're right handwriting is a dieing art, sad really as most of our modern day correspondence is done electronically.

The odd card or note that I do send is scrawled shamefully in a barely unrecognisable script resembling a drunken spider.

Handwriting going away followed by hand written letters. I was talking to a military wife the other day who was upset because her Marine husband hadn't emailed her in TWO days. I said, "HE'S IN A WAR! HE DOESN'T HAVE TIME!" Sheesh those whiny women.

My wife and I have 2 large boxes of cards and letters we wrote during my 20 years in the Navy when we were separated. It would take 7 - 10 days for a LETTER to go one way. Forget telephone calls from overseas, or AT sea. I was gone 12 months twice (Viet Nam, Middle East), 13 months once (Antarctica), and 6 months twice (Indian Ocean, Mediterranean), not counting the 10 days here and there (I could write, but she couldn't...I might be home by the time the letter reached where I was.)

For almost 7 months we could not mail any letters (I was in Antarctica..it was winter), but ONCE IN A WHILE we got a ham radio/telephone call...often at 2 or 3 a.m. here in the states. Once a week we could send a 100 word 'ham-gram' (like a telegram). Ham radio/telephone calls lasted just a few minutes..."I love you, over". One time there were serious solar flares and we had NO contact with the world. While cleaning, my wife and I have pulled out the letters and read some to each other (we would number our letters to read them in order because sometimes 3 or 4 would show up at once).

What's sad is that those women who depend on emails will have no letters tied in string (or a bow), stored in a box in the back of the closet to read years down the road. When my mother died, we found many letters written the 2 years my dad was gone fighting in Europe. My sister has them now.

I was taught handwriting like the kids in the generation before me.

My mom had beautiful handwriting. But even with her teaching me, mine was never that great.

I always preferred not to write. I would use a typewriter if possible.

Now I don't hand write anything but Envelope addresses. And signing my checks. Soon I won't have to do that as we'll all use a debit card.

And one of these days I'll learn how to print addresses on my computer. Maybe.

One of the best things I inherited from my mom was her beautiful penmanship. And, I was always taught that hand-written letters/thank-yous were the only right answer (i.e., never typed or by phone). I used a computer/calculator for so many years, that my carpal tunnel syndrome is so bad, I can't even match my signature most of the time. It took me a month to do a handful of thank-you notes from Christmas, because I couldn't find a day that my hand would write legibly. And, if I use the lawn mower or hedge-trimmer, then I can forget picking up a pen for days!

I hate that I can't write anymore. You're right that much is done on the computer or by phone now, but when I want to write something, I would love it to look the way I expect it to look.

Yes, until I have to make out a check to the IRS!

Seriously, it is becoming a lost art form and I for one miss the days when I got so excited when I would get a card from a friend in the mail! It is NOT the same when I get an e-mail.

I love to journal and keep a diary too. In as much, my handwriting stays pretty much the same.

When I started first grade in 1943 we began learning to write as well as print. We were graded on how well we wrote and we took pride in it. We had a whole class on handwriting and did lots of exercises such as "push-pulls and ovals". Today, people often comment on my pretty hand-writing. Handwriting wasn't taught the same to the generations after me, it seems. Their handwriting is a combination of longhand and printing and is often hard to read. Now that so many young people send text messages, many words aren't even spelled out anymore, making it all worse.

I still write checks for some bills, and I notice my handwriting has gotten sloppy it used to be a very beautiful handwriting too..But I've seem to notice that my grandson is very good at writing for a kindergartner..and he loves to draw too and I am thankful for that because I don't want him to be glue to the computer forever either....I get lots of free address labels in the mail so I don't have to write that down though..=)

Afraid so, but I still handwrite letters, notes, cards & in my journal so with me it isn't completely lost. I love getting handwritten correcspondence from old friends & family in the U.S. Mail. I love purchasing note cards and stationary still even tho it does seem like I am the only one enjoying it. You can find some very interesting supplies on sale because it is a lost art.

Probably...because most peoples handwriting nowadays resembles a what a rabbit with diarrhea left behind as he ran across the paper.

this is such a good question i have a few note books that i use and notpads

they are reliable durable and have there own antivirus and malware for free

pencils have instant delete and a human brain and dictionary for spell check

it is becoming a lost but is still necessary for signatures id

but you are right i kinda felt strange the first time the ups guy had an electronic signiture taker

but it amazes me that when the computers are down no one will just take the money and hand write you a reciept a sale lost and a customer changes his or her attitude towards the store and the times

thanks

Being an artist, I find handwriting to be a huge part of my personality and a good strong autograph is as good as a firm handshake. Calligraphy is a beautiful way to display favorite poems, songs and quotes. I am teaching my grandchildren to express themselves through handwriting, finger-painting and in other mediums. It's great for their motor skills.

Definitely Yes! My handwriting was once so nice and now is an ugly scrawl. If I can get motivated, perhaps I'll buy a Calligraphy set and start practicing again. But don't hold your breath.

I, for one, certainly think it is. When I was in grade school school the girls practiced their handwriting trying to make it beautiful and were thrilled when other girls said theirs was the best.

During the civil war long letters were written home and some are now in museums. These days it seems men more especially think writing letters are sissy or something.

I do remember our English teacher demonstrating how to produce beautiful handwriting which I managed to copy very well.

Down through the tears it has diminished.

I think so. My daughter (age 17) and my grandchildren (ages 7 to 21) all prefer to print, and their teachers accept that. When I was in school we had to use ink for everything but math, and good penmanship was required. Things have changed, and change is not always progress.

I always hand-write checks for the bills that I pay. I've also kept a diary for the past 45 years, and always hand-write the day's events in my diary.

With me definitely. I hardly ever write any more, and when I do I hardly recognise my own writing. I write poetry from time to time and was thinking of taking up calligraphy as a hobby for if i need to write them out.
