I've used trekking poles while backpacking. They give me a third leg for balance. A ski pole will work just as well and I can't think of any reason a walking stick would contribute to any problems. If anything it will help to take some of the pressure off the knees.

It would depend. They would not offer enough balance and stability for someone who may need a "quad foot" cane, or could use their wrist and ot arm and the angle it would require. I personally like them, used a "walking stick" over uneven terrain often when i became a uniped.

it is easier to get up from a sitting position with poles as they are longer and you can reach up and pull yourself up all so you are less likely to fall as you are not pushing down on a cane that is below your waist and unstable .Against they are not easy to store on a bus or taxi etc

cons: none.
Trekking poles are best but too awkard to try and use in shopping centers or markets. Good idea to have both on hand.

On a past group tour to Eastern Europe, one of the women was using two trekking poles for support for her hip challenge. She was in her 70s and nothing was going to keep her from walking with the group. The adjustable length & the handgrips were the reason she preferred these.
