He had the same manager as Tom Jones, Gordon Mills. Tom Jones changed his name from Thomas John Woodward and Mills suggested that Dorsey change his name to something which would draw more attention.

It worked quite well for both of them. They were certainly famous in their day.

There already were recording artists called Dorsey and Englebert Humperdink was a name nobody would forget once heard and the guy could sing so it helped in his success.Dicky Valentine was another artist whose real name was normal enough and i'm not sure if Percy Sledge was his real name but i doubt it

Probable because of the last 5 letters in Humperdinck.

Simply, to attract media attention and be recognized. "Humperdinck" sells, Dorsey doesn't.

I wonder if it had anything to do with German opera "Hansel and Gretel" based on the Brothers Grimm story.

The composer was Engelbert Humperdink.

You had to have a gimmick back in the day, just ask "Shecky Green". Actually although more entertainment people use their real names, some still change them. Ah...the price of fame : )

Because "Bite Pit bull Bite" was not considered a proper name for a crooner in the mid to late 60's.

Because he couldn't get anywhere with his career using his real name. He almost starved to death. He needed a name to get every peoples attention and it worked !

I suppose for the same reason Marion Morrison changed his name to John Wayne......

To be unique or special...
