Basic Cable

But my picture tube went last January.

Sometimes I listen to World News Tonight.

Occasionally repeats of Everyone Loves Raymond.

I don't even need to see them to laugh.

I subscribed to Directv about 4 years ago now and will never switch to anything different. I have the "Choice" package with over 100 channels plus "XM Radio" stations with music from the early 1940's through today along with Classical, Jazz and country.

The picture is all digital and I do not have to worry about getting a coupon to acquire a settop box come February 2009.

For about $64 a month I don't think you can beat it.

i have had cable for many years and i have never been satisfied with the service i get for the amount i pay. I'm being ripped off and i distrust satellite. and i never watch most of the channels but they are dumped on me and in order to get the ones i do watch i have to pay for something i dislike.

We have the plain old everyday antenna with the new converter box..the converter box gives a much better picture and a few more channels..we don't watch much TV so it works fine for us..

I haven't had a cable or satellite dish since 2005. Since we do not spend a lot of time viewing tv anymore we decided to just go for an outside antenna and watch broadcast tv. Since the government has mandated for all tv airing done digitally, we applied and got 2 $40 coupons and both 2 digital tv converter to continue to receive broadcast tv programs.

We have cable TV at our house and I resent paying $45 for it each month. If it was up to me I would be using an antenna on top of the house and watching whatever was televised for free by local TV stations.

I have basic cable. I'm happy with it. I don't watch that much television. I had HBO for awhile and discontinued it because I didn't watch it enough to be worth paying for it.

My parents, who are retired, have HD premium cable service and the picture quality is beautiful, but they have WAY too many channels, IMO -- hundreds of them, it seems. How can anybody possibly watch or keep track of what's on all those channels? Who needs it? Yech!

Sounds to me like the management got scammed and you are paying the price. ALL cable companies are required to provide the new system. contact the FCC and stop this kind of scam.

Just no more free TV. I don't know how going to get our local programing. As the cable and/or Satellite don't offer it. We live in the country and have Satellite dish. The local channels are that main close metro city, not were we live.

I used to work in the cable television business, so I pretty much understand the changes that are happening now. Who told you the existing cables weren't up to the standards for digital transmission? Was it the cable company or the company with the satellite dish? Or do you live in a condo/co-op development and the Board of Directors told you that? I'm just asking because I doubt that the cable company told you this. They would rather upgrade the service and keep you as a customer.

You're right -- the dish is much more expensive than cable. The picture is better than the analog signal you were getting on your old cable, but it's not any better than the digital signal you would get on a new cable. I like my digital cable very much and, fortunately, the Board in my co-op has decided not to spend the large amount of money to bring in satellite service.

EDIT TO RUSSELL - Your board of directors has authority over your management company. Get your board involved -- tell them your concerns. Sounds like you guys have been railroaded.

We have Verizon, which isn't working as well as it should. We've had them all.

We started with Comcast and then, when it got too expensive for the same stuff, we went to Dish. Dish was good, but it really doesn't work when it's cloudy. I thought that was just some kind of nonsense made up by the Comcast people in their commercials but it's true.

Then, when my dad moved in because of his knee replacement surgery, we went back to Comcast because Dish didn't give us local sports. Comcast was worse then every! In four years of Dish, the repair guy was out once. The Comcast repair guy had to come 3 days after installing it and was their at least 10 times in the year we had it.

Then we went to Verizon Fios, cable optic stuff. We have the phone service, internet and TV. It had been working great up until a month ago when we would turn off the TV but the "box" would still be on and vice versa. Also the fast forwarding through commercials of recording stuff isn't working right. And whenever my husband turns on the desk top computer, the internet connection is lost on my laptop.

Yes, I wish we could just go through a list and take the channels we want. We've got all kinds of sports channels that we don't watch and we don't need. It should be ala cart.

I haven't heard of anything like that happening here. I have cable, and the wires are on poles, not underground, so I don't think it will be an issue. I'm happy with my current service, excellent sound and picture, but I do find it a bit expensive. I'm considered adding a couple of the movie channels, which I don't have now, but I have to check the price first. I do find sometimes, that even with the 60 or so channels I have that there often isn't anything that I want to watch.

I give up the dish because it will not stay on the air! So I went back to cable. Works just fine for me - but am not too thrilled with their internet service! Hope this helps. BTW - I now pay $94.34 a month for phone, internet and TV - and I was paying $60 for a dish alone! This program is called the Dish Buy Back Program!

I have Direct TV & have two dishes. One is for High Definition. I don't watch a lot of tv in the summer, but I do watch more tv when winter & its 50° daily temps & cold nights (high 20's & low to high 30's roll around) I bought a sport's package & now I can watch the Cleveland Cavs play & watch the pre/post game programs. I can watch other teams play as well. I love the HD...what a super picture.

I'm mad as hell and advocate that everyone in the USA turns off TVs February 19, 2009, until the cable and satellite company allow us to choose the packages of channels each subscriber selects.

I have cable for both tv and internet. I like them, I don't have to pay extra for my local stations. I did have a big dish once, but it was analog and as more stations went digital, my choices became very limited. I didn't like what I saw when I read the fine print on the small dish.

I quit watching tv years ago. I read the newspaper, listen to news radio, or read it online. We have a dvd player and when we want to watch something we watch a movie. My mother is on a fixed income and complains all the time that she is broke, but she still pays out for cable. when I look at it, there never is anything worth watching so I don't miss it and I can be happy about all the money I am saving!

When we moved out here in the country about 7 yrs ago, cable wasn't offered like at our old house, so we got DirecTV. I love it, wouldn't go back to cable now at all though it was finally offered.

I can see what's coming up 3 days ahead, set 'my shows' to come on that I don't want to miss and set to 'favorites' so the list only shows the channels I'm interested in and I don't have to scroll through the others. I can get my NASCAR races and PBR, plus many other shows I like. So for me the cost is worth the enjoyment we get from it.---Luvs

I have cable, and am happy with it.

My cable company is making the change for Feb., but they will still be carrying the analog, so we don't have to buy a new HDTV,

Sorry your cable company isn't doing the same.

We only buy cable services for the stations we want to watch. We don't have alot of channels that we don't use.

I just got cable a few years ago. I still have a console tv that's about 25 years old. I'm hanging on to it as long as possible. I resent that all the tvs in the stores are HDTV. I just want a regular tv with a built-in VCR. Can't be found anymore.

We have cable because someone out on our road works for the cable company. Otherwise we would be unable to get it. If we had no cable or satellite or whatever we would get absolutely no tv reception. We usually get one or maybe two radio stations here. We live out in the boonies in the Ozark Mountain foothills. I wouldn't leave it for all the tv reception in the entire world.
2008-11-03 11:05:30 UTC
AT&T have really been messing up our TV reception in the senior housing where we live for two weeks we haven't been able to get antennae TV reception which is free (included )they are supposedly putting in high speed internet some thing or other dern em. I have to get modern and up to date they are going to do that for me on election day OF ALL DAYS so Ican watch and hear the election news. I must be able to hear the up roar regarding proposition 8 at least thats the only one I really care about. Great balls of fire now I'll be able to get 150 channels that I will never watch.

We have direct tv so the change over won't bother us. Yes I think there are to many channels and it would be better if you could really pick what you want but the stations come in a package so not much you can do.

We have cable. We get upgradable basic cable with our maintenance fee in our community. We have upgraded by adding some channels, internet and telephone. Basically, we're happy with it, but I'm thinking about cutting back the channels to save a few bucks.

We have Comcast cable, the Basic service. The reception is pretty good. We don't have all those movie channels. We don't watch TV that much, so we don't need hundreds of channels. Who can watch or keep track of that many? Not us.

We have had satellite for 10 years. My husband is a Green Bay Packer fan. So we had to get a Satellite dish to watch all the games.
