Question:
Why do new civic groups seem more interested in getting people to help than in actually running the program?

I saw that there was a new community group forming for seniors, so I decided to go and see what it was about. Well, the first thing I was told when I arrived is that they were in desperate need of people to help with the programs. Now there were already the 4 people there who indicated in the announcement that they were the "hosts" and only two showed up for the actual program. It seems to me that they want more helpers than people that are coming. Doesn't too many bosses often result in conflict? I just wanted to go and see what was happening. I'm not that interested in taking on any other responsibilities right now. Why do the hosts assume anyone that shows up is there to help rather than just be a guest?

That is why I quit volunteering at certain places-the school when my kids were younger, for one. There were several "know-it-alls" who wanted to do nothing except collect the money and basically take credit when projects were done, while two or three of us did all the planning, footwork and clean-up.

That seems to be the norm now, as most women are far too busy being important to stoop to menial tasks that can be done better and more efficiently by those "less important." What the heck does a "host" do that they need four of them!

You just have to stand your ground. I was part of a civic group that had all members that were ready to tell us what to do. Hard part was getting them to work. Just have to be firm with people in these situations. Tell them you'll lend them your words of advise but not able to help right now. The best bosses are those that get right in there and work too.

you were drafted. before the group can run, they need volunteers. they are the life blood of any civic groups.
