In case you're unfamiliar, it was set up by Esther Ranson who also established ChildLine.

Its purpose is to match suitable volunteers to elderly people who, for whatever reason, are alone. I volunteer for another charity which is more focused on emotional support, but I have registered my interest in being a 'Letter Friend'. I'm only 23-years-old but have much respect for senior citizens' wisdom.

Would you ever consider using a service like this?

Lovely post and good to hear about your volunteer efforts. Keep it up.

The add in your link really doesn't do anything for me. I don't need any more recipes, or CDs. I moved to the Southern California desert, to get AWAY from superficial people. When I want company I have neighbors within 20 minutes driving time. Some of us even visit each other. Some as often as twice a year, but those tend to wear out their welcome. I'm slowing down, and will need some help doing heavy stuff soon. Until then, I kind of prefer the coyotes, rattle snakes, and scorpions, for company.

I think it's a great idea. It's very nice to see young people doing volunteer work. There was a woman on here in the past week who was looking for suicide methods due to her chronic loneliness. She was complaining about being all alone in the world. She didn't mention her country, but said it wasn't the US, maybe a service like that could help people like her, or others that are suffering a loss, or those just having a very lonly moment.

I think it is a good idea for those who feel the need for it.

Some people are lonely and might require a "helping hand"

or voice.

There will be some crossover though, as "Age UK" are also

able to put people in touch with volunteer bodies with similar

aims.

I do not see myself using the service as I have lots of friends

and peer group support and take pride in being independent.

Yes. I have a lot of things I need help with...I can still do most things but it takes more time and I run out of it and energy. I wouldn't register online without being very familiar with your service. The sad part of what you say is that when you sign up someplace and give your information as well as the fact you are alone, that list makes you a target and most places just bring in anyone off the street and you just can't be sure who you have volunteering. I drove a bus in my past and I used to hear the ladies that helped the elderly out laughing about how much they stole and what piece of jewelry they got that day...and these people were supposed to be checked out. You would put yourself in a place to be sued big time but your thought is a nice one.

I'm sure it will bring comfort to many people. I don't think I would use it as I hate using the phone.

I am sure it will be a great tool for someone who is in need of help. Good site!
