"Superman", "The Lone Ranger", "Sgt Preston", "Helen Trent", "Inner Sanctum". You? I enjoy the ones on the nostalgia rebroadcasts, but I never remember having heard them "live", like "Gunsmoke".

While I'm not quite as "seasoned" as some of the other "seasoned citizens" on this forum, my earliest (and best) radio shows were all of them done by Jean Shepard. If you aren't familiar with Jean Shepard, let me enlighten you...
You know the popular movie played at Christmas time entitled, "A Christmas Story" about the boy desiring a Red-Ryder BB Gun? THAT story was from Jean Shepard. Take a listen to some of his old radio shows at the link below. He was a true storyteller... SOOOOOOO much better than Garrison Keillor (sp?).
Have a "senior" day.

B Bar B Ranch, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, The Shadow, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Phil Harris, Our Miss Brooks, Baby Snooks, George and Gracie, Amos N Andy were big excitement at our house. On Sunday nights, we would sit at the kitchen table, finishing any missed homework, my mom would iron and we would all listen to the radio. Seems so long ago and it is.

The Orson Wells Radio Show....wow, what a show he could put on. I never heard them in the 30's & 40's live, but I did hear them on the radio in the 50's & 60's. The stations would play the records that those shows were recorded on in the Los Angeles Area & they were called "Nostalgia Radio".
I also remember listening to "The Detective Hour" & "Murder Mysteries" on the big tube radio in the 50's before we had a television set. We'd sit around it like it was a campfire!

My first memories was when my father listened to the Joe Lewis Boxing and John L. Lewis, the President of the big Union.
He spoke often and we were so young, we thought he was President of the United States.
I remember Tom Mix and bought a tom mix ring, We had to have a Hot Ralston cereal box top and I don't remember the cost, but it was cool to have one. It glowed in the dark.
All so, "The Shadow Knows" and I remember, "oh Henry" sponsering something for J. Edgar Hoover. Maybe most wanted.
I also was listening to the radio, sitting on my dads lap when they came on the radio and announced the bombing of Pearl Harbor and I remember the day they announced, that the war was over.
I was born in 35. I wish I could remember better. I use to remember so much.
DeeJay.

Tarzan-----remembering putting myself as close as possible next to the old valve radio and concentrating. I think it was about 5.30 p.m. week days followed by Superman which was also good and certainly better than watching TV for hours although you can stretch out and be more comfortable, the sound is better, the picture incredible with my new TV. At the moment there seems to be a rush of murder investigations and detailed descriptions of the life and development of maggots----please give me the jungle and room to imagine nicer scenarios !

My earliest memory is of a local [Springfield Ohio] radio show "Smilin' Bob"
Bob had the morning show on WBLY-AM.
It was light chat, silly stuff, ppl called in to say hi or gripe about the town, and kids,or "hinkeydinks"could call in and get a nickname from Smilin' Bob.
He also announced winter school closings,so we'd wait anxiously for our school to be mentioned.
My college coach was his son-in-law so reports of my wrestling successes were broadcast far and wide, within a 10 mile radius of SPFLD.
My elders spoke of Lum&Abner,Fibber McGee's closet,Amos&Andy,The Shadow,and many others I've forgotten.

Eventually,us young teens found Radio Luxembourg which played the popular hits, crackly and kept fading, but to us,brilliant.
