We are within striking distance of old castles, moors ,dales sea- sidesmuseums and many other areas of interest in my County. Durham, England. Most of these places are within an hours drive, or less from my home?...

Well, I must agree with CJ. Door County, Wisconsin has over 250 miles of coastline dotted with quaint hillside churches, lighthouses, state parks, rocky beaches and sailboat-filled marinas. Fresh produce and reknown dairy products can be purchased from the roadside farmers markets during the summer. And picking cherries form the many orchards can be a fun afternoon adverture - along with sampling the cherry wines! Also, there are lots of outdoor concerts and theatrical productions. The American Folklore Theater puts on nightly performances in the woods at Peninsula State Park during the summer.

But being someone who enjoys a good meal, no visit to the area is complete without participating in the local fishboil custom. This Scandinavian tradition involves filling a large cauldron with potatoes, whitefish and spices, and setting it all on an outdoor fire. Combining the fish, beer, music, and company makes for a splendid evening. And home made ice cream from Wilson's Ice Cream Shoppe (a revered institution) is always a necessary stop afterwards.

Door County, WI. It has everything I like- shops, wine, restaurants, state parks, Lake Michigan on one side, Green Bay on the other. Beautiful when the cherry trees are in blossom, but I like to go later when I can bring some home. The restaurants put cherries in everything. They have Scandinavian festivals, the Norwegian one is fun; they set up bonfires all along the shore and the new Chief arrives by Viking ship escorted by another boat. They have lighthouse tours, etc. At Christmas time, you can go caroling from one hotel to another, carrying candles. I can't forget the famous Door County Fish Boils. I didn't really know the history of the area until last summer when I bought a DVD. Very interesting.

You let me know when you are coming to Cebu Philippines and I'll save you some money. It's a good town for a vacation and has high dollar resorts or you can take a cab from a good hotel that very fair and clean .

If you are into the old Spanish conquests this is the one that kicked them out. If you are Catholic you can find a lot of interesting old religious sites. A cheap plane ride and you can see everything. Like the Chocolate Hills in Boholl where you can find good diving as well as from the city.

You would be surprised how cheap it can be.

This spring the desert is wild with color as the desert blooms. Miles of poppies and tiny flowers that are no bigger than your little fingernail. It looks like it has been carpeted in big patches of different colors. But you must be quick as they only last a couple of weeks and the roads are lined with people and their cameras.

Or you can go to the military base and take a tour and have a lunch and be in life size Iraq villages that have real Iraq people in them and get onto the military equipment the men are using over there and experience what our troops live with.

Or within 40 miles you can be in the high mountains and the lakes and trees.

Currently, it might be Las Vegas for a holiday value. With this slumping economy, the casino hotels are offering discounts & deals to attract customers.. 3.5 - 4 hrs drive from LA.

For camping & nature, I think going to Death Valley National Park is beautiful & the temperatures are more agreeable than later in the year. About 4 hrs drive to the desert.

Both are in the same general direction.

I would like to visit Times Square in New York. I have never been to a big city.

I live close to the ocean, that is, the Gulf Of Mexico and people vacation there a lot. I am also only a few hours from Disney World and all of the theme parks.

Las Vegas is pretty fun, I used to live there. You have to use good judgment, it is not necessary to gamble lots of money to have fun there, people watching is great! If your vacation is long enough you could make Las Vegas your "homebase", and from there many interesting places to see without too much driving time. Half a day and you are in Los Angeles, go the other way and you will get to Zion National Park. Drive to Death Valley, You are a half day away from the great meteor crater. (different direction) You are close to mercury where they will not let you proceed to area 51. Much more I haven't even mentioned is easily available from Las Vegas.

Have fun!

The "Historic Triangle" of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. The Shenandoah Valley. Washington D.C. in April when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Virginia Beach if you're a beach person. The Outer Banks of North Carolina for fishing.

The New Orleans area has the French Quarter, nearby plantations and Cajun Country. We are close to the Gulf of Mexico beaches and casinos. Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest are coming up soon, but there are festivals here all year. Our motto is "Laissez le bon temps rouler!" or, Let the good times roll! We have great fishing, wonderful antique stores, quaint streetcars, and a beautiful zoo and aquarium.

BTW, the girls on those "Girls Gone Wild" videos are NOT locals!

I decided to edit this down a lot & just say the Russian River area to see the Russian River with its redwood trees & native ferns & moss under the trees & madrone & manzanita as well. I love the trees wherever I go, & I used to live out there until the commute just got to be too tiresome. Well, it's still a nice place to visit & to take walks. There's the Armstrong Redwoods State Park there as well. The houses, too, are interesting. Often they were once summer cabins for folks from the city, & often have wood-burning stoves or maybe propane tanks or some combination...maybe even everything electric, except for a wood-burning stove for heat. Many of them are built on stilts due to frequent winter flooding or because they're perched on hills. Sometimes it feels like living in a bird's nest. The cats could go in & out a window & jump down to a stump. In a storm we'd watch the redwoods sway--a bit scary, & they do sometimes fall, but not too often. Power outages are frequent, though. We also watched the squirrels fly from tree to tree. As the cats watched that sight, I told them, "Now don't you try that." Having moved from flatter land & places with city lots, fences, & normal trees for climbing, I always wondered what they thought. At least they could sun themselves on the redwood deck, & they got pretty adept at taking the stairs down to my apartment, still pretty high up like a bird's nest.

By the way, I'll vote for the Branson area that Suzianne mentioned. My mother went there a couple of times with her travel club from Oklahoma, & it's like a 2nd version of Nashville. It was only later that I was looking at a Missouri map to see where Rockaway Beach was because we had a great time on our family vacation there several times when I was a kid. I found out that it's quite close to Branson. We went swimming, rented pedalo boats, stayed in a cabin with our own kitchen, & signed up & went on the early morning horseback ride that ends up at a cafe for breakfast, then makes a return ride to the starting point. I wonder if they still have all that. It was great for families.

Ah, well, I see this is still pretty long. Well, that's it. You can always scan it & get on with your life.

Branson, Missouri is a great holiday destination. There is something for everyone there, from bass fishing on the lake to seeing Dolly Pardon's Dixie Stampede show.

I'd love to go to England and Norway. I have unknown relatives in both countries, but I do know the areas they came from and I would just like to spend time there.

Other than that someplace warm right now.

For me, it's at my son's home, because it's bigger, which allows more family & friends join in. The ocean is nearby for others who like spending time on the beach. The view is awesome, as there's always so much to see.

On a family cruise, with our children and their families. Or maybe at the beach with them. We all love the ocean. Sometimes I dream we are all together again instead of scattered far and wide. Poppy
