When I was in the Navy, I had 3: ANDY, DAD, POPPA SMURF
Andy came from my last name.
Dad came from one of my ships that had 114 women on board when we went to the Indian Ocean to Diego Garcia. I had 11 women working for me, and some of the younger ones started calling me Dad. Before I went to my last ship before retiring, I was in a Navy school and a first class petty officer walked up to me and asked if I had been on the L.Y. Spear. When I told her I had, she asked if I knew a certain female Chief. I told her I had. She stuck out her hand and said, "HI, DAD!" When we pulled into a port on the way to and back from the Indian Ocean, I always took some of 'my ladies' with me to show them the sights (I've been in over 30 countries, some more than once).
My last ship was an aircraft carrier (USS Nimitz). One day during a divisional meeting, the division officer asked where I was. Someone said, "He's over there behind the counter." DivOff said, "Stand up so I can see you!" And the same person said, "He is!" And they started calling me Poppa Smurf. They even took my foul weather jacket that I wore on the pier every day and stenciled Poppa Smurf on it. The person who worked on our fork lift trucks only knew me by Poppa Smurf. One day she came to the ship and no one was on the pier. She went to the mid-ship brow and said she needed to see me but only knew me by my nick name. So, they 'passed the word' "SK1 Poppa Smurf, you have a visitor on the mid-ship brow." About 4 or 5 years after I retired, I ran into Pat at the mall. She grabbed me and hugged me and said "Poppa Smurf!" My wife laughed so hard, she had tears streaming down her face.
There are a few of 'my ladies' I still keep in touch with (inculding a retired USMC Gunny Sgt, a friend of one of 'my ladies' who lives in my town) who still call me 'Dad.' One whose husband is from this area comes to town occaisonally and when she is in town, she'll call me to see if they can stop by. The phone will ring and I'll hear, "Hi Dad!" I don't have any 'natural' daughters, but I'm 'Dad' to her.
Not long ago I met a lady through my work and we got talking about our time in the Navy. I mentioned crossing the equator and the 2 women who were my 'poly wogs' (people who have not gone through the crossing intiation). I mentioned the lady who was my 'wog dog' coming north and it turns out the two were sisters! She said "DAD!"
Sorry for being so long winded.
