Question:
What was your favorite school cafeteria meal?

I loved the fresh yeast rolls, and hamburgers were OK except that they baked the french fries and they were tough. Guess the meatloaf meal was the best, meatloaf, green beans, potatoes and a roll

When we moved to our new grade school in 6th grade, the there were

two days where kids would want to buy their lunch. One was the day

they had hamburgers, and they came with a bag of potato chips. We

didn't have the luxury of french fries in grade school.

And the second meal we'd be tempted to buy, would be spaghetti

with a slice of french bread, and I think jello. We could pretty much

plan on a 'spaghetti' day each week, but not for a 'burger day'. They

were placed further apart. So if there wasn't a burger day that week,

sometimes mother would give me change to buy an ice cream bar.

There was something about food from the cafeteria, I swear it made

me pay more attention after having a treat eating something from

there.

We didn't have and still don't have that sort of thing where I live (may do in boarding schools though).

Instead we had/have a 'tuckshop' or 'canteen' where you buy your food at the counter made by volunteer mums or dads and then you go and sit out in the open and eat it.

Now days we sell a 'traffic code thing' of healthy foods and drinks. But I remember when I was at school having vegetable pasties if you were nasty and meat pies full of flies or ham and salad rolls for lunch and mock cream buns or jam filled donuts for morning tea washed down with a coke in a small authentic curved bottle or fanta or lemonade.

I also remember that I have the standard 7 fillings in my teeth and my children have never had any.

Chop Suey--it was weird. Black (I assume from the soy sauce) and lots of kids wouldn't eat it but I liked it. Also loved it when they put out little bowls of pickled watermelon, my friend and I would eat them all since no one else (in the school maybe) liked them. And their baked fish, which not many people liked (back then, many people didn't regularly eat fish except for canned tuna). I sometimes smell that lemon-butter baked fish smell walking down the street and get the hungries. Basically, I tended to like most of the school lunches except for the baked/broiled meat (rare made but when they did have it, it was always real dry and tough as leather). My mom never made any of that kind of casserole stuff so to me it was a walk on the wild side.

We didn't even have a cafeteria until I was in the 5th grade or so, and the food was pure slop. We had none of the things people are mentioning here, at least not so a person could tell that's what it was. It was all nasty. I used to take my quarter across the street and buy 5 fresh donuts for five cents a piece.

I loved the yeast rolls too! They served it with a peanut butter and jelly mixture. Yum. The other thing I remember was some kind of sweet potato cake that was really moist and flat. I wish I had the recipe.

They were called cheese dreams and tomato soup. Sooooo good.

The sandwich seemed like an open face hamburg roll with a cheese spread and put under a broiler. Also, in grade school I loved their apple crisp. Think I told this before but I asked the ladies for the recipe. Of course they were making it for hundreds but didn't they sure enough get me a family size recipe. Loved the lunch ladies with their lace hankies on their uniforms like a flower.

Pizza (we had a chose) pepperoni, cheese only

Tacos. But I made mine into a salad.Every time I made a taco. I bit in it and the shell would crack down the middle of it lol.

Some days I would get a milk shake. They were thick we had to eat them with a spoon.

My Sr. year they installed a radio over the speakers in the cafeteria. You could hardly hear the radio with other people talking at the same time.

I don't remember anything being very good except for Apple Crisp. I rarely ate in the cafeteria. In high school there was a snack shack at one school I went to. Everyday I ate the same thing at it, bar-b-que beef sandwich on a french roll, a chocolate malt and a Payday candy bar. I loved it. I still love bar-b-que!

Since I lived only a couple of blocks for both my grade school and my high school, I always went home for lunch and had stuff my mother made, which was always better than the cafeteria stuff. I think I ate in the cafeteria twice in four years, and I hated it both times.

Meatloaf with the milk gravy. And they had the best rolls ever!

On Fridays we had grilled cheese and vegetable soup with cake for dessert. My second favorite with the spaghetti with those really soft school cafeteria rolls. Yum.

fish sticks, mashed potatoes, green peas, and fresh hot rolls. And the mashed potatoes has a layer of melted cheddae cheese on top!

I remember this dessert they had called "Chinese Chewies". It was every kids favorite. It was a very rich, heavy brownie type thing with confectioners sugar sprinkled on top. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers were also a favorite.

Being from Southern California, when a teacher would order a large fruit salad and she didn't end up buying it, it was available to the students. It was the most delicious salad with the freshest fruit, oranges, apples, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe and bananas. It was cold, crisp and the best to eat! Thanks for the memory.

That was so long ago I barely remember but I do remember the barbeque sandwiches served with potato chips and dill pickles, I think there was carrot sticks and applesauce with it too.

Always chocolate milk.....yum, something we did not get at home.
